3 Rules To Save You Money When Buying Your Kid’s Bedroom Furniture

Buying suitable kids bedroom furniture is a serious business. The biggest problem with buying furniture for children’s bedrooms is that there is nothing cheap on the market anymore. There is only expensive, and even more expensive. Doing it wrong could end up costing you hundreds of dollars every year as you are forced to replace old decor that your child outgrows. Do it right and you can save yourself a lot of money and effort.

Rule #1. The most important point to note is that children change their minds very often. So you want to pick a neutral design with as few decorations as possible. That absolutely means no cartoon designs. It also means no complicated or over-bright colors – camo is a no-no, and the same goes for fire engine red. The best choice is bedroom furniture made of fiberboard with a plastic veneer layered on top of it. Fiberboard furniture is relatively cheap and yet can last your child several years of use. The plastic veneer (preferably in a light neutral color) allows you to use stick-on decals for decoration. Every time your boy or girl decides that a new cartoon character becomes his or her favorite, you can easily remove the old decals and replace them with the new. Helping your child choose the decals and helping him or her stick it on can become quality family time.

Rule #2. Buy slightly over-sized beds and wardrobes. Kids grow fast. Some of their growth spurts can be quite alarming. If you do not want to buy a new bed every 6 months, make sure you allow enough clearance for your child’s growth. Try to cater for 3 or 4 years of usage in any kids bedroom set that you buy.

Rule #3. Install overhead bins and closets in your child’s bedroom. Make sure it is high up against the ceiling, so that it remains out of his or her line of sight. Most people, kids included, tend not to see or notice things that occur above their heads. When your child is young, he/she is obviously too short to use these overhead storage compartments. You can use them for storing your child’s spare bedding, etc. When he or she is older, these spare storage bins will come in handy for storing spare belongings and toys.

Buying children’s bedroom furniture can be deceptively easy. Learn from the pain of those who have gone before you. If you choose to ignore the lessons passed down from more experienced parents, you only have yourself to blame when the consequences fall on you.
