How To Stop Your Garage Costing You Money
If, like many people, you have an integral garage (i.e. one attached in some way to your house) then there’s a good chance that you’re spending rather more than you need to in order to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.
You are undoubtedly well aware that if you, for example, installed high quality double glazed windows but failed to insulate the loft then thermal differences between the inside and outside of your house would seek the path of least resistance (i.e. the roof). In other words you would end up heating the great outdoors with heat that you are paying for, which is both pointless and expensive.
An integral garage is by definition a part of your house and often also the biggest single interior space within it. If it is not insulated as well as the rest of your home then it compromises the overall insulation with weak spots on adjoining walls, ceilings and doors. It really is little different to deciding to expose, say, a study room, to the outside – it will affect the rest of the house.
Insulating a garage is inmost respects very much like insulating the rest of the house, with one very obvious and sizable difference, namely the garage doors. Most garage doors these days use a steel panel that has all the insulating qualities of, well, a steel panel. Steel is a most excellent thermal conductor and accordingly spectacularly hopeless at providing any form of insulation whatsoever.
There is however a very simple and fairly inexpensive remedy. You may either purchase a garage door insulation kit which can be easily attached to the inside of your existing doors, or invest in new pre-insulated doors. This latter route is an option if you also want to upgrade your garage doors or if you happen to own wood garage doors since although wooden doors provide much better natural insulation than metal ones, the only way to get really effective insulation is with a wood garage door panel that has been manufactured with an internal layer of high performance insulation.
