Be Safer With Garage Floor Coatings

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaDo you know what the number one cause of fatalities for men under 40?  It is accidents.  This makes sense because usually during this age men are pretty healthy and most problems don’t show up till after 50 or 60 years of age.  One area that is a prime accident site is the garage for do-it-yourself weekend warriors.  In particular, you would be surprised at how many men slip at home and hit their head causing potential brain injuries.

The best way to make your garage safer is to coat the floor with a non-slip garage floor coating which will give you better footing while also allowing you to lay on the floor working on your car or move items on wheels around easily.

The best coating for a concrete based garage floor is going to be epoxy.  Epoxy based products are one or the so called “space age” solutions to common problems that came out of our major leaps in scientific knowledge during the 1950’s and 60’s.  The theory behind epoxies is really quite simple to understand.  There are two parts, a resin and a hardener, these both come in a liquid form that makes mixing easy.  If the resin is used by itself it will eventually dry but it won’t be super hard, this problem was solved when it was discovered that adding another chemical compound sped up the curing process and made it much stronger.  Mixing the resin and hardener together causes a chemical reaction that produces a very tough, and durable surface that will protect the floor for years to come.  Adding some gritty material like natural sand does not hurt the strength, in fact it gives it more structure, and it gives some friction on the surface which makes it much less slick.  The combination of toughness and anti-slip is what makes these garage floor coatings so helpful to homeowners.

The process is very simple.  First you clean the floor with a degreaser and detergent, then you mix the resin and hardener together.  Next, you roll out the epoxy mixture just like paint.  Finally, you let it cure for a few days and you have a super tough, non-slip floor that you can even color if you so desire.
